In February 2015, the extraordinary city of Matera became one of the locations for the American blockbuster Ben-Hur, a new version of the celebrated 1959 film.

Several scenes were filmed among the evocative Sassi di Matera, chosen for their ancient character and remarkable cinematic atmosphere.

Directed by Timur Bekmambetov and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Paramount Pictures, the film featured an international cast including Morgan Freeman, Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell and Rodrigo Santoro.
